13th of January 2015 Cierva Cove / Antarctica 64°07,8’S, 060°57,2’W

This morning I was on a special mission! I joined Henrik, Marek, Joel and Oscar in the “hot chocolate boat”.

The National Geographic Explorer was spending the morning in Cierva Cove and the passengers went on Zodiac tours. At some point during their cruises the drivers stopped by our boat and got some hot chocolate for their passengers. A lot of people even took some “anti-freeze” with it as Henrik likes to call it.

This was an outstanding morning! Cierva Cove, located on the west coast of Graham Land, is surrounded by glaciers. The Argentine research station Primavera is set up at Cierva Point. The Cove was filled with lots of ice and some really enormous ice-bergs.

I kept losing my hat and at some point everybody was feverishly searching for my sun-glasses. That was actually pretty funny.

We did see some Gentoo Penguins and even found a Leopard Seal on an ice flow.

Best of all, though, were the Humpback Whales, which tended to come really close to the Zodiacs. Amazing!
