| Fred-Report:
Hooray,
on Monday we reached the ice edge at 61° 30’ S – and I was
one of the first to see the ice, cause mostly I sit on top of two
whale watching books, so that I have a good view out of the
front window on the bridge.
Sea ice freezes at round about -2°C, but because of the waves
there is no homogeneous ice cover. First there is frazil ice
and then grease ice. These little ice pieces bump at each
other so that they build a typical pancake-shaped ice floe.
Believe me or not, they really look like pancakes with some
"icing sugar" on top – mmmh, yummy. Some of them are
really huge – up to three metres and more.
It was so wonderful looking at the frozen sea. I really have no
words for this amazing scenerie – thousands of ice pancakes
floating on the southern ocean – sparkling like diamonds in
the sun.
I’m really happy for being on this cruise.
Thanks to the captain, thanks to the crew and thanks to all
the scientists on bord,
Sending kind icy regards,
Yours,
Fred
