Fred-Report:

Early this morning we came alongside in Olden. We encountered some fog, which was hanging pretty low. It was a bit moist and chilly outside. Olden is located in the Oldedalen Valley off of Nordfjorden. We used the village as a get-away for an excursion to the Jostedalsbreen National Park.

Main goal was the Briksdalsbreen. Anthony, our IT Officer, took me along on the tour.

We learned that the Briksdalsbreen, which is only 25 km south of Olden, is a very popular hiking destination.

The guide also told us, that the glacier has been monitored closely since 1900. Glaciologists observed, that after receding between 1934 and 1951 the Briksdalsbreen had actually expanded again between 1967 and 1997. Isn’t that amazing? The glacier has been growing at a time when other European glaciers were receding. But I guess I should not get too excited. The glacier has been declining in the past years and is meanwhile pretty narrow at some stretches. Glaciologists are afraid that the Briksdalsbreen might even disconnect from the large Jostedalsbreen.
I enjoyed the excursion never the less. Anthony took me for a walk through the National Park and along the glacial lake Briksdalsbrevatnet.

We saw a lot of pretty things like waterfalls, huge and colorful mushrooms and moss-covered huts.
